Weill, that’s me back frae ma holidays i Romania this week. It’s a bonnie kintra - luvely mountains, forests, castles... I didna get tae the Danube delta or the Bleck Sea, but it seems there’s a bittie for awbodie there – specially fowk that likes guid fuid! That minds me, I maun be aff tae the gym later on...
There’s a bittie there for Scots-leid anoraks an aw, or at least Scots-speakin etymology anoraks (an wha isna?). I jalouse I wrate a whilie back that Romanians cries a corbie a “corb”. We hae ither wurd i common an aw – either common tae Indo-European (it micht no leuk like it, but “peşte” an “fush” is faur aff kizzens) or wurds baith haes taen frae Laitin (Romanian “celebra” leuks no sae deifferent tae “celebre” [i.e. celebrate] that kythes i DOST. Ither wurds we baith skares comes frae Romani, as we micht cry a bodie a “gadgie”, Romanians taks the Romani loanwurds “gagiu” (“cheil”) an “gagica” (“lassie”). I the ae wey, we hae “chore” an they hae “a ciordi”, also frae Romani. It’s the same in Urdu an aw.
While we’s at it, the SLC haes an innin i Romanian, sae gin ye hae freins or co-warkers frae Romania, send thaim the link tae: http://www.scotslanguage.com/articles/translations/2000
That’s aw for nou,
