Census - nou the wark ralley stairts

Posted by Duncan

Weil, first I’d lik tae say walcome tae Margaret Tong – I’m ralley luikin forrit tae readi mair o yer blogs, Margaret.

The muckle news for Scots raicently haes been the 2011 Census.  Efter a lang darg, at lang an lest Scots’ll hae the same respeck as Gaelic an Inglish i the census.  O course, this isna the same thing as equal respeck i the media, eddication, the job merket an sae on, but it’s a stap i the richt direction, ane dout about thon.

Gi n naething else, for the first time fowk in ilka hame i the kintra wull be obleiged tae think for a wee about whit Scots is – makkin it like as no the biggest linguistic consciousness exercise Scots haes e’er haed.  O course, thon’s whaur we maun mak shair fowk kens whit Scots is, an howpfouly the wark the SLC is daei wi GROS wull dae the job – but o course the lave o us maun dae wir pairt an aw.  Gin there wis e’er a time tae no be blate about Scots this is it – blogs, message buirds, Facebook, letters tae the papers an aw the lave.  Gin the census shaws a guid nummer o Scots speakers, readers etc. i the kintra it’ll gie wir caws for mair Scots in eddication, braidkestin etc. mair wecht.

There shair is a guid hantle Scots curns on Facebook (maistly for regional dialecks), sae I howp we can wark throu thaim tae better co-ordinate pittin the wurd out about whit Scots is.

Aw the best,

Dunc
